In The Beginning

Hey, welcome to ‘3 years, 6 months and 5 days in the life of…’

This is my little project to give me a creative outlet. Something to keep me motivated to take cool pictures, write, maybe even do some movie or musical work, who knows.

The name was inspired by the excellent 1992 debut album from Arrested Development entitled '3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days In The Life Of…' you would be forgiven of only remembering the hits Mr Wendal and People Everyday but trust me, it's one of the most underrated albums of the 90's.

Anyway, I have always liked the title and decided to adapt it slightly, 365 is a good number for this project.

Last year (and into this year) I used the nifty app '1 Second Everyday' to document the last year of my twenties. I started it on my birthday and took a one second video every day for an entire year. It ended up being a great year to do it as I had a lot of exciting things happen; I had a pretty decent car accident, went on my bachelor party to Amsterdam, played a bunch of new board games, drank a lot of new beers, went to see the Colts play for the first time, went to Star Wars Celebration, got married, went on honeymoon in Hawaii, played with the neighbours cat who kind of moved in... all sorts of crazy stuff. I'll post video, it's cool.

Since finishing that up I've been wondering what to do next. Something similar, but bigger. More involved. I saw this amazing video online of a guy who took a photo of himself every day for ten years and cut it all together. It was fascinating and inspiring.

So what I've decided to do, what this site will be, is a journal of the next 3 years, 6 months and 5 days of my life. Every day, I plan on posting a photo of me and a photo of something else from that day, it may be a totally mundane and boring photo but hey, we all have those days. I will also write a small amount each day, the topic of this is going to be whatever I feel like. Some days it may be about me and what's been going on in my life, some days it may be some history, I may decide to do a top ten or list about a topic, it could cover a weird dream I had the night before or it may just be some context or explanation to one of the photos from that day. It could be anything, but I think it'll be a really good outlet.

I guess this whole thing is kind of a blog, but that word seems to conjure a particular idea in people's minds and I don't want anyone who may be reading to think of this in that way.

Todays image is nothing too exciting, just a weird meta picture of this post while I was finishing it up.

So, why am I doing this you may ask?

First and foremost as a way of expressing myself and getting some of my creative ideas out there. Not necessarily for anyone else but just for me. If people enjoy it and follow it, cool, but this is mostly a selfish endeavour.

There's other reasons too and they may come up in the days, months and years to come. I guess you'll have to keep checking in on me to find out!

A little bit about me before I get started, and so when I look back on this I can compare my life then to it was now.

I am currently 30 years old, have been happily married for just over a year, no kids yet. My wife and I live in a rented house that we've been in for four years, we really like it where we are but would very much like to own a home. I have a decent but not particularly thrilling job and have been doing it for nearly three years. I'm a bit chubbier than I'd like despite being at an okay weight. I am maybe not the most social person in the world but have a good core group of friends and a complicated family (mum, brother, sister - all married) all of whom I love.

So day is Monday October 2nd 2017 that means that my final entry should be April 7th 2021 which just so happens to be my 34th birthday. Anyone would think I planned that or something!

This is me right now, I literally took this picture seconds ago before posting this.

I think that's enough for now… I doubt I'll be writing this much each day but I thought a little context was important to get going.

I hope to see you back here tomorrow, in the mean time feel free to subscribe and send any thoughts, comments or suggestions to me on twitter @jhewlett
