Another Dead Rockstar
Today's image doesn't have anything to do with the post, I was out at Arundel Castle though and thought this was a really nice view.
So Tom Petty died the other day. That really sucks.
I’m not going to profess to being the biggest fan in the world or even having a deep connection of much of his catalogue, but he was always someone I had a lot of respect and admiration for. I think the fact that he was the same age as my dad would have been was one of the reasons it hit me. I don’t even know if my dad was a fan, though I imagine he would have been. The Travelling Wilbury’s stuff at very least.
We’re losing a lot of rockstars recently. It’s not going to slow down either. These guys led hard and fast lives and even if they’ve seemingly cleaned themselves up now, that shit takes a toll and they’re all getting older.
Every time we lose one of these musical icons it really makes me think, dammit why have I not done that yet. No, I’m not talking about being a musician or dying. I’ve had a great idea for a podcast for a few years now but I kind of think so highly of the idea that I would only want to do it if I knew it was going to be absolutely perfect.
I’m debating even talking about it here because I don’t want the idea to be taken out from under me, I’m trusting you to talk to me first if you’re also interested in doing it.
I’d like to start a long form podcast called Another Dead Rockstar in which myself and preferably one other co-host would do a deep dive look at a particular dead musician. Think NPR style, really in-depth research. I would want to find out about their histories, influences, aspirations, careers, everything.
The other main reason I haven’t done this yet is it would be a lot of work for just one person and I would want my co-host to be just as invested in putting in the time.
I would like to cover not just recently deceased people but from all eras. I think it would be most fascinating looking into some who I didn’t even particularly enjoy the music of.
The whole thing would be handled with a lot of care and respect but not just a puff piece glorifying of the subject. I think it would be a really nice way of eulogising all these incredibly talented people.
A monthly release schedule would be what I would start with until such time as the research could be done quicker and we maybe had enough episodes banked that weekly wouldn’t be too hard.
If anyone is into this and is interested in maybe pursing this with please contact me so we can talk and see if we could maybe do it.
Hell, even if you would just be interested in listening to it please let me know. It would be a labour of love that I would only really like to do if there was going to be an audience.
“Take it easy baby, make it last all night”
Oh yeah, tomorrows post might be quite late, I'll probably be writing it on the train home as long as my phone still has battery!
