Quick Hits #2

It’s Friday evening, I’m watching the episode of Off Topic that I saw live but couldn’t hear as I was in line for a signing and was stood behind a speaker.

I don’t really have a plan for todays post so I figured I’d do another Quick Hits. Enjoy!

Fridays take me past Corfe Castle in Dorset, it's pretty cool. Maybe I'll take a better picture sometime.

I’ve been trying to self improve recently, I suppose we should all be doing that constantly shouldn’t we? I’ve been making a little effort in a couple of small areas though. Like really small. For as long as I can remember I’ve often mindlessly picked at the skin around my thumbnails. It wasn’t exactly a nervous tick because it wasn’t bought on by nerves, it was just something I did. Because of this they’ve looked pretty haggard for ages. Not long ago I picked a bit and it obviously was too much as it ended up bleeding quite a bit. I made a decision then that I would consciously try to stop myself every time I’ve gone to pick, it hasn’t really been that hard and they really look a lot better.

Since last Sunday at the NFL I’ve not had a beer either. I’m trying to take a month off. Not for any particular reason, I just like to prove to myself now and then that I can. This evening has been the hardest. Sara usually works Friday night and early Saturday so I tend to go to the shop after work and get a few beers. I still went to the shop today and actually had to stop myself walking down that aisle.

The other benefit of not boozing for a month is that I’m saving a bunch of money! My shop on a Friday would generally cost about £15/£20… today, under £5! I hadn’t even considered this and its kind of awesome. Between all the things I’ve been up to the last couple of months, I’ve spend a bunch! I really need to save as much as possible for the rest of the year. Donations Welcome! Ha!

I enjoy reading and listening to audiobooks while I’m driving for work. I haven’t been reading as much as normal recently, I’ve been slowly going through the Star Wars short story collection that came out recently. Its a mixed bag, some of them are really good and others are completely forgettable.

I am looking forward to a couple of books coming out before the end of the year though. First up is Andy Weir’s follow up to The Martian called Artemis. Instead of a dude isolated on Mars trying to survive this one is apparently about a chick living in a very small Moon colony.

Not to sound like a smug prick but I was an early adopter of The Martian; I have a signed first edition of the hardcover, so I’m really excited to see what he does next.

The other one is sort of related as Mark Watney from The Martian is referenced in a previous book in the series The Expanse. James S A Corey have (its two authors) been really consistent with releasing a new book each year and I am so thankful for it as they are so damn addictive. This is the seventh in the series so I’m not going to go into details but if you like a good sci fi epic, get on this series asap.

Halloween is next week. I’m not much for the holiday, I don’t dress up or particularly do anything for it. I used to when I was Doing full time as it was always a good, busy night, but I’ve decided to do a spook themed week of updates. Hopefully you’ll appreciated a themed week.

Alright, I think that’ll do for today… It’s going to be weird not getting half cut and tweeting out of context crap about whatever movie I end up watching tonight. Maybe I’ll just tweet nonsense anyway, who knows. Follow me @jhewlett to find out!

I am enjoying being a hat guy again.

I’ll see you tomorrow, I’m planning on ticking another movie off my list of shame!
