Thor Ragnarok came out this week but we haven’t had a chance to see it yet. Hopefully we will next week as I’ve heard nothing but good things.
I decided to cross another film off my list of shame today by the same director; Taika Waititi.
Sara and I watched What We Do In The Shadows a couple of years ago and really enjoyed his unique style and sense of humour. It’s a real breath of fresh air in filmmaking and totally unlike anything else. I’ve been meaning to watch Hunt For The Wilderpeople since it first came out but for whatever reason I’ve just left it sitting first in my iTunes library and then on my Netflix list.
Like The Breakfast Club last week I thought I had the film pretty figured out from what I’d seen and heard… I was so wrong this time!
Hunt For The Wilderpeople is such a charming, fun, quirky and heat warming little film. Sam Neil and Julian Dennison make such a nice team playing off each other.
Taika Waititi has such a fun shooting and editing style, lots of still camera shots with an almost photography framing and cuts to solid colour for a few frames in scenes of action and high tension.
The story is simple enough. A delinquent orphan kid being taken in by a gruff rural couple and the adventure. It takes plenty of surprising twists and turns along the way though and its hard to keep a smile off your face for the entire run time. The ending it builds toward is a lot grander than I was expecting too, but I don’t want to give anything away. It’s on Netflix and should be available to buy cheap now too, so theres no excuse to not check it out.
I was pretty sure I would enjoy the movie but it really has got me excited to see what he does with Thor.
This was a much more recent movie to tick off my list of shame. The next one is already lined up for sometime next week, I’m going back to the 80’s for that one.
Thats going to do it for today. I started writing a future post in bed last night based on a text message I’d received a few hours earlier. It pertains to what would be the primary storyline of the year if my family was the subject of a TV show and its not really all that fun. But it has been cathartic to write some of it down. I’m having to go into quite a lot of back story to give it context so if/when I do publish it, it will probably be a multi-part entry.
I haven’t really planned anything for tomorrow yet… I’ll see what I can come up with.
