So todays post started out as part of yesterdays but I decided to break it off into its own post.
Today took me to a place I haven't been in a while, this used to be a nightclub I DJ'd at a few times and my brother was the resident DJ at for a decade. Now its some offices. Weird.
We watched a couple more episodes of Stranger Things the other night, I’m still really enjoying it. Sara has taken to watching it with a note pad and scrubbing ideas for screen prints she wants to make based on it. I think this will become a trend with some of the ‘prestige’ shows we watch.
She’s got some exciting stuff coming up, I can’t wait to share them.
I’m still plowing through Assassins Creed Origins. I’m trying to get as far as I can before Battlefront 2 drops at the end of the week. I’m not rushing though, I’m still enjoying playing through all the side missions I come across in the world.
Artemis, the new book by Andy Weir came out yesterday and I’m already a bit over halfway through. I’m listening to the audiobook when I’m in the van and I’m tearing through it, I (metaphorically) can’t put it down. Like he did in The Martian Andy Weir brings his mix of casual, conversational dialogue mixed with seemingly factual, well researched science. His style isn’t for everyone, it has a popcorn feel to it, but I really enjoy it. The novel, set about a hundred years in the future, follows Jazz, a 26 year old Saudi woman who has lived on the moon since childhood. Artemis is the first and so far only permanent habitat off planet and is basically a small city, complete with high end hotels and casinos to down and dirty dive bars and squalor. Jazz makes her living by being a porter, basically a courier service for anyone willing to pay. She has a few connections that allow her pick up some jobs that aren’t exactly on the up and up but since Artemis is technically classified as being in international waters she justifies her smuggling to herself and is able to squirm her way out of trouble with the only ‘law’ on the station, a Canadian mountie. That is until a job that was too good to be true ends up in fact being too good to be true. Funny how these things go. Jazz is soon mixed up in things way beyond her and… well I haven’t finished the book yet so I guess I’ll have to find out. If you enjoyed The Martian, book or movie, I’d say give this a shot. Its a fun page turner. The only thing I’ll say is that, like a lot of second books recently, this feels very much like it was written with a big screen adaption in mind from the outset. Having been listening to the audiobook its going to feel really strange if anyone other than Rosario Dawson plays Jazz as she does a killer job with the narration.
I just finished watching the latest episode of Star Trek Discovery. I’ve never watched a Star Trek show before, I don’t have anything against it, I just never really had any desire to before. I figured I’d give this a shot when it first aired, the fact that its available on Netflix in the UK helps, I don’t think I would seek it out otherwise. Its pretty alright. I still can’t say I’m crazy about it or anything, but the production value is good, the story is interesting enough and the acting is solid. Jason Issacs is really different from the other captains in the limited Trek I’ve seen before, which admittedly is only clips of Piccard and Kirk and the JJ Abrams movies. It definitely is moving a fast clip too, this weeks episode had some stuff in it that felt like it could have been in a season finale. I’m not sure if they’re taking a break until the new year, but after that episode it wouldn’t surprise me at all.
I hear that this show is dividing a lot of long term Star Trek fans and that doesn’t surprise me at all. It’s probably for all the same reasons I’m enjoying it though to be honest. The characters are flawed, they fuck shit up when needs be and they aren’t all completely altruistic.
It’s not a show I’m chomping at the bit for each week, but I’m enjoying it.
No new movies for a little while, I keep meaning to and then time just gets away from me. This evening is a perfect example. I had a long day at work today and by the time I got home, did some dishes, cooked some dinner, watched a little tv it’s half eight and I’m writing this!
I did just get Logan Lucky though, maybe I’ll watch that at some point this week. I like Soderbergh movies and I hear that this one is fun.
Still no haircut
Thats it for today, bit of a media roundup post. Come back tomorrow and see what I come up with then!
