This evening me and Wez went and did some nerd ass shit. It was a lot of fun.
We’d found out about a place not far away at all that was hosting Star Wars Legion games, among loads of other tabletop miniatures games, I’ve been eager to try it out and start playing it since getting into the hobby and Wez is always up for trying things like that out.
The store/club is in a small industrial estate, upstairs in the converted office space of a warehouse. Luckily the guy had signposted it pretty well otherwise no one would ever be able to find it!
We got there not long after it opened and the only other people there were the owner, who was very friendly and chatty and welcoming and a dude who was clearly a regular who was just hanging out killing some time while his partner was still at work. The owner showed us around and explained everything about the place and told us all about the table he’d been getting set up for Legion demoing.
I’ve never played a miniatures game like this before but I’ve played enough board games and read through the rule book enough that I had a fairly good grip of how the game worked. Wez hadn’t checked out how to play the game at before we started playing but has more experience with mini war gaming.
We stumbled through set up and getting to grips with it all. Things were coming back to me as we started playing and it all started to click into place a couple of rounds in. Wez got the hang of it fairly quick too but we both had to refer back to the learn to play book a fair few times throughout. Even then we still missed a good chunk of the rules in order to just get the hang of the mechanics of the game.
It was really fun! As we started getting into it and making some more fun moves the game really picked up. I started out doing quite well but as soon as he got Vader into play he kind of tore through my rebel troopers like it was the ending of Rogue One again.
We had a good time, it was a nice chilled out way to spend a few hours on a Friday night. We’re planning on going again next weekend at some point. I’m going to bring my own painted up minis next time and I think we’re going to go a bit deeper with the rest of the rules.
It is super nerdy but I really enjoyed it. Those sorts of hobbies can attract a real anorak type crowd, but as long as you’re with the right people it can still be a lot of fun.
I’m pretty tired, I think might have an early night tonight. I’ll be back tomorrow though. Until then, may the force be with you?
