I watched Baseketball today for the first time in years. Matt Stone & Trey Parker’s riff on sports movies from 1998 has always been a favourite of mine and I can’t even begin to guess how many times I watched it in my teenage years and early twenties.
It’s been a long time but I still knew it almost word for word and was quoting jokes before they happened throughout.
What got me this time round was how many subtle jokes I picked up on that I have had before. Subtlety isn’t generally considered to be one of this duos main comedic stylings but I think it often gets overlooked.
Sure, everything they do from Orgasmo to The Book of Mormon has a pretty in your face approach and South Park is the biggest example you can point at, but even there, there is a lot more going on than is often looked at.
Baseketball is no different. The dialogue and acting may all be on the nose but so much set dressing and background stuff is just as hilarious as everything in the foreground.
It makes me want to go back and revisit other old favourites from that time but I genuinely believe that there aren’t many comedians has witty, smart and cleaver as those two.
I love it when an old favourite holds up and when you still discover new gags twenty two years later, well that’s just the icing on top!
