Fractured Community

This is a tough one to write today, way more so that it should be by any logical sense but for a small group of people it’ll make a lot of sense.

I checked the Achievement Hunter and Rooster Teeth subreddits this morning as I do most days. I like to keep on top of what’s going on with the community I am a proud member of.

I’m not the most active member of the community and I’m probably on the older end of regular fans of most of the content but a few close friends and I still throughly enjoy almost everything that RT in general and AH specifically put out and we’ll talk about it all frequently.

The top post on r/achievementhunter this morning was from one of the community moderators explaining that the company are looking into everything and dealing with it appropriately and that any open speculation on these forums and public spaces will be deleted as it will only perpetuate the spread of things that should be kept private.

They asked that the community be respectful of this and not jump to any conclusions or start getting aggressive.

It was vague as were most of the comments but my immediate suspicion, unfortunately, was that a staff members private images has leaked or been stolen and put online, likely one of the young women at the company because that’s just the gross world that we seem to live in.

I was curious as to what had happened but wanted to respect the wishes of those potentially involved and so didn’t dig deeper.

It wasn’t until a few hours later when one of my friends also involved in the community sent me a link detailing everything that had been bubbling and blowing up over the last day or two. While I was glad to see that it wasn’t what I initially expected I was still really bummed out with what I read.

I’m not going to go into any details because it is a, not my place and b, there is still a lot of hearsay and speculation without definite answers.

What I will say is that the evidence is damming, what happened definitely happened and is shitty as hell. What isn’t clear is the context and in this instance that is key.

On one hand we may have a situation of a couple of people making really poor personal decisions that will likely have massive ramifications on their personal and professional lives. The less positive side is that who people who otherwise seemed like genuinely good people are a lot more deplorable and potentially have committed some gross crimes.

I am waiting hear official word from Rooster Teeth as to which it is and how they’re going to proceed, I expect that information to come within the next week or so. I have faith yet will handle it appropriately as they have proven capable of in the past. I also hope that the RT Community is respectful and supportive of the process, people involved and decisions made. Time will tell.

I was originally planning on writing about the idea of ‘heroes’ today and talking about a few of mine, one of which is a key player at Rooster Teeth and Achievement Hunter.

The idea of doing that at the moment seems kind of ridiculous now though. I may revisit it in the future.

None of the people involved in this situation were someone I’d have considered a hero but they were people had a lot of admiration for and respected. Whatever the outcome, a lot if not all of that has now gone and it’s really disappointing.

It’s disappointing not because these were entertainers I enjoyed watching or did stuff I was inspired by. It’s disappointing because they’re real people, with real lives that they’ve done possibly irreparable damage to. I’m disappointed because of the hurt they may have caused others.

These people are so minor and small scale in comparison to many of the celebrities who have been outed as disgusting humans, but because of my much closer approximation with and affinity for the community that is built around the content they produce it feels a lot more damaging to me.

I’m going to wrap up there because I don’t really know what else I can say. I’ve been talking with my friends who know the details and we all seem to be feeling similarly about it.

We’ll see how it plays out, hopefully it’s resolved quickly, one way or another.

It’s a hard day to be a fan, but I still support and believe in the RT Community.
