Goals For The New Year

So yesterday I mentioned that I don’t believe in resolutions and part of the reason for that is that by definition they’re too set in stone. I’d much rather have a bit of flexibility in the things I would like to accomplish as for me at least, I find that to be a much healthier and productive way of achieving what I set out to do.

I do have some goals for 2020 though, and these are just a few of them off the top of my head.

I want to get back into more creative writing. I started out pretty strong with it last year, following an online course and doing just a little bit every day. Obviously writing daily is something I have been doing for a few years now anyway, but having an imaginative spark or a course to follow is good. I’ve neglected it for too long and I think getting back into that will help my writing here too.

On that same vain there’s another course programme I have but didn’t ever even start; beginners architectural drawing.

This is a weird one because it is quite far out of my regular wheelhouse but I’ve really admired building architecture specifically the design work behind it for quite a while. I’m gutted I had no interest in it at school or anytime in my youth, but it’s never too late to learn something new even if it’s just as a hobby. I have absolutely zero artistic talent at all but hopefully following along with the course videos and accompanying files will at least be enjoyable. I’ll get started on that at some point.

So as you’ve seen from reading this, I enjoy going to indie wrestling shows. When I was a kid watching it one of my favourite things was Shawn Michaels ‘kip up’ that he (and many others, but he was my dude) would do. I’m sure you’ve seen it, it’s when you’re lying on your back and you pop straight up to a standing position. It’s really cool and always really impressed me.

I started thinking over the summer that I’m getting to a point physically that I might be able to learn how to do that and so it has kind of become a small fitness goal for me. I’ve practiced the motion of it a couple of times but only when I’ve been lying on my floor... not the best place to learn the kind of thing that will inevitably have you falling flat onto your back a bunch. My aim is to spend some time on the slightly softer grass when the weather is nice in order to get it down.

I say it every year and this year is no different, I’d love to get a regular audio or video podcast or similar project going regularly again. I miss that creative outlet a lot. Maybe it’ll happen, maybe it won’t. A lot of that depends on the right idea coming along with the right person or people and then a lot of scheduling. In all honesty it’s something I’m more likely to focus on once I’ve finished up this whole project as I won’t be writing as much every day, but if something comes along before then, great!

The last one is just a fun thing I’d love to get going and that is to be a part of a regular D&D or other tabletop RPG group. Or to have a few friends to play board games with more often. It’s a really fun way to hang out and spend a few hours with people, have a laugh, tell some stories, that sort of thing. I miss it. Ed is running a Star Wars game which we’ve had a couple of sessions of, hopefully with him settled into his new place now that will become a more regular thing and scratch this particular itch.

Back to normal now after all the xmas and New Years stuff. It’s nice having a few extra days off but I’m fine with everything getting back to normality! Come back tomorrow. I’ve got no idea what I’ll be writing about.
