Star Wars Speculation

Okay, so it’s now firmly January, The Rise of Skywalker is coming up on a month of release soon, The Mandalorian has wrapped up its first season and Jedi: Fallen Order has been out for long enough for most people to have finished it if they bought it on release.

That just leaves comics being released for current new material as there isn’t another novel for a while yet.

We don’t actually know what is coming down the pipe at the moment. Not for certain anyway. Sure, the revival final season of The Clone Wars is dropping on Disney+ next month and will likely tie up not just the loose threads of that animated show but also give us a bit more Mando lore that will tie all the series together, and we have the final few episodes of Resistance still to air, but beyond that everything is currently wide open so I thought I would do some wild speculating before announcements start getting made.

I’m going to break this down into categories, I’m well aware that this post has an audience of me and maybe three other people at best, but I don’t care. It’s fun for me to write.

First up is animation. It has been announced that there are currently two shows in development beyond those mentioned above but that is all we know right now. I have got to believe that, knowing Dave Filoni and his affection for the character, one of these shows will be picking up the threads laid out in the epilogue of Rebels and will follow Ahsoka and Sabine in their search for Ezra and presumably Thrawn. I think there is a lot of potential to tell some stories in corners of the galaxy we’ve never explored before there and with concept like the ‘world between worlds’ being created during Rebels I look forward to whatever comes next. Timeframe wise I would guess this takes place between the original and sequel trilogies so cameos from movie characters are possible.

The second show is wide open. My dream would be a full Rogue Squadron show with Wedge, Hobbie, Tycho, Janson and the rest as the main characters. Set it after Empire and follow them through the Battle of Endor and beyond, mopping up the Imperial remnant. It’s a pipe dream I’m sure, but you never know. More likely option is that it ties into what I’m going to talk about next.

Onto publishing and we have a few announced books and comic series. The big thing that has a lot of people talking is the illusively named ‘Project Luminous’ that was teased at Star Wars Celebration last year and is due to start either later this year or next. All we know about it currently is a collection of writers from both novels and comics are working on a multimedia story. This may be contained to just publishing but it has the chance of being something much bigger. There is a rumour floating around at the moment that it will involve the next video game to be produced and as I said, the other slated animated show.

I’ll come back to this later as it may all be a cross platform build towards something else.

Strangely, it’s live action tv series that we know the most about at the moment. The Mandalorian has been a smash success for the new Disney+ streaming service and the powers that be are going to want to capitalise on that. It’s almost certain now that any story ideas that may have been developed into ‘A Star Wars Story’ ala Rogue One and Solo will now be considered first as a limited or ongoing series for Disney+.

We already know that Diego Luna and Alan Tudek are reprising their roles from Rogue One in the ‘Cassian Andor’ series that will see the freedom fighter in the early days of the rebellion before the events of that movie. I would be shocked if we don’t see how he and K-2SO first came into contact with each other and the imperial droid reprogramming. I wouldn’t expect to see any other members of the main cast make appearances but I would like to see some of the other Rebels we met in that film and characters like Bail Organa and Mon Mothma would be welcome additions if only for brief cameos.

The other new show we now know is definitely happening after years of rumour and speculation is the Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Ewan McGregor coming back once again. He is the appropriate age to bridge the gap between himself in the prequels and Sir Alec Guinness in the original trilogy and there is plenty he can be doing from the shadows of the Jundland Wastes on Tatooine while keeping an eye on a young Luke Skywalker. Joel Edgerton has expressed an interest in coming back as Owen Lars and they are apparently looking to cast a young Luke. I have high hopes. Rebels featured one scene with Old Ben encountering an old adversary but there are more stories to tell. What I do not want though is him going off world or involved in anything that would raise suspicions of the Empire. Dude is meant to be in hiding!

Before those though we know that The Mandalorian will be back on our screens in the Fall of this year. I don’t want to say too much for those who haven’t finished season one yet… Rae, but by the end of the season we have a good idea of where the next season will at least begin.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we have at least one more show announced before the end of the year. They got to keep those subscription numbers up. My personal pick would be a show about Lando and Jannah set after The Rise of Skywalker with the revelation of her being his lost daughter as mentioned in the visual dictionary.

That just leaves us with the movies.

The Skywalker Saga is over. It’s done. But that doesn’t mean Star Wars movies are finished, far from it. For a while it looked like we were still going to have a movie a year between all the tentatively announced projects. A lot of those have been rolled back, redeveloped or frankly just gone quiet now, but by all accounts the movies Rian Johnson has been working on will still happen. It was originally announced as a trilogy but that could be anything now as both Disney CEO Bob Iger and head of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy have said that the plan going forward is to move away from the structure of trilogies and tell stories as they dictate without being stuck to that formula.

In the mean time Rian is continuing to make the movies he wants to make which I think only helps the chances of him coming back to Star Wars more likely, though I wouldn’t be surprised if his aren’t the first out the gate.

The other film or films I don’t think we’ll get first are whatever it is that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige is working on. I’m excited to see what he comes up with, but the dude is spinning so many plates with his own franchises I wouldn’t want something half assed from him in the Galaxy Far Far Away.

The most likely film we’ll see first, the one that currently has a xmas 2022 release though I’d expect that to change, is whatever it is that was originally in the hands of Dan Weiss and David Benioff before they… parted ways with Lucasfilm post season eight of Game of Thrones and them signing a big deal at Netflix.

At the time there were rumours of them working on something set in the Old Republic and this week we’re hearing chatter about the next movie being set in the newly named High Republic era, around four hundred years before the events of The Phantom Menace. This all sounds like some version of that same idea to me.

I believe that Project Luminous will be coming out in books, comics and video games laying out a lot of the ground work for this wholly unexplored timeframe in Star Wars history and possibly introducing some characters that may appear or be referenced in this new, what is being called ‘Saga’ of films. There is a chance that all of these announced projects are a part of this new saga set in the same timeframe.

I was thinking about it yesterday and something occurred to me about the timeframe; Now we know Yoda, he’s around nine hundred years old in the movies we’ve seen him. Let’s say between eight and nine hundred years old. He’s an wisened old master, he’s seen it all before.

We’ve also seen, thanks to The Mandalorian, that a fifty year old member of Yoda’s species is essentially a young toddler. So dial back four hundred years from The Phantom Menace and that would put Yoda at around four hundred and fifty, give or take a decade or two, right in what I would assume is his prime! That is something we’ve never seen and given the world dominating success of ‘Baby Yoda’ I think Disney would be eager to want to capitalise on that in any way they can.

The concept excited me in principle, but then I remember being excited about seeing a young Obi-Wan and Anakin before we did and we all know how that turned out. But Star Wars is, in my opinion, really great right now, so I’m staying optimistic.

Oh yeah, it would put Maz Kanata at around the same age too, so I’d love to see her swashbuckling her way around the galaxy and possibly interacting with Yoda as was mentioned when The Force Awakens was being released. Neither have to be the lead characters, but are prime secondary players in whatever this story could be.

Right, I have gone on long enough. If you made it this far it must be because you share my passion for this nonsense. Hit me up with your thoughts, opinions or personal speculations. I’d love to talk Star Wars with you.
